Video Surveillance Security Systems - CCTV
There are a number of reasons why video surveillance
security systems provide good protection in a home security
setup. They can give you advance warning - a person walking up
your drive, or trying to go round the side of your house, or
perhaps a deliveryman arriving with a package, for
example.
They can also provide a recording of an
event that has already taken place, such as an attempted or
actual break in. They provide a facility to protect those parts
of your property that are vulnerable, because they are on your
blind side.
Video surveillance security systems are everywhere. You must
have seen them in Shopping Malls, precincts and parking lots,
for example. They consist of closed circuit television -
or CCTV as it more commonly called - installed in areas
where crime is prevalent.
The CCTV cameras are trained on likely trouble spots, the
video images are monitored at a command centre nearby which
liaises with the local law enforcement agencies, and
they act as a valuable means of identifying criminal
activity.
The main advantage though, is as a deterrent, and this is
where it is so useful to install a video surveillance security
system in the home. A
ny intruder targeting a home equipped with video
surveillance has got to weigh up the possibility of detection,
either of being caught in the act of a break-in or of being
identified after the event through appearing on cctv video
footage recording the crime.
Video surveillance systems can be utilised in a number of
ways. They can be installed outside your property, in which
case they have a high profile presence, and they can be
installed indoors, often in a concealed manner. Either way,
they can have a strong deterrent effect on would-be
intruders.
A video surveillance security system usually consists of one
or more video cameras, a monitor to view activity and a
recording unit so that you can playback and view images. The
system can be running constantly or can be activated by motion
sensors either in the house or outdoors. Night vision security
cameras are preferable, as they cover the possibility
of an intrusion at any time.
Although these systems have been expensive in the past, they
have reduced in cost in recent years. They do require a bit
more maintenance than an alarm system - camera lens might get
dirty, the camera may need adjustment, and they need to be
installed in such a way that they cannot be tampered with (or
stolen even!) to maintain their effectiveness.
Whenever you are considering fitting surveillance cameras,
especially outside your home, be sure to check with local
regulations about their use. They should be seen to protect
your home and not intrude on other peoples' privacy.
