More Home Security Tips

Wherever people live, the security of themselves and their family is a high priority. There are many precautions that can be taken to ensure that your home is kept safe, that cost either nothing or very little, and here are some home security tips.

Outdoor Home Security Tips

Wherever your home is located, check that your landscaping does not provide too many dark shadows for a would-be intruder to hide in. Ensure that windows are not obscured from the road by high bushes and shrubs.

Planting thorn bearing bushes beneath windows can be a useful deterrent as it makes climbing to higher windows that much more difficult without getting scratched.

Install some exterior lighting to cover any really dark areas of your property. If it has motion sensors fitted, the lighting will be activated whenever someone tries to sneak by your house.

Ensure that your front door is robust enough and that it fits well into the door surround. Loose fitting doors can be easily forced open.  And ensure that the door lock is still effective.

Indoor Home Security Tips

Don’t leave keys near open doors or windows. They can be stolen and used for access later.

When you are going out, ensure that all windows and doors are fully shut. Don’t leave anything unlocked, even if you are only going out for a few minutes. That’s all it takes for a walk-in thief to steal something important.

Try to keep valuable items inconspicuous in rooms that are easily viewed from the road.

Don’t hide a spare key somewhere at the front of the property. Thieves know to look out for them.

None of these home security tips work if you don’t act on them.  Home security is about taking a common sense attitude towards protecting what is yours.
